Keeping our Oceans In Mind

Divers are just temporary visitors to the underwater realm but the choices we make can have long lasting effects on the health of the coral reefs and the marine environment we love. Let's do what we can to not love it to death.

SCUBAPRO's "Scubapro Cares" Campaign

Scubapro Cares about our environment. This is evident in the materials used to make and package their products.

  • X-Foam is a formula made from limestone-neoprene, not petroleum-neoprene, reducing petroleum consumption for future generations.
  • Naturalprene is a latex rubber that replaces petroleum-based and limestone based neoprene. It comes from rubber trees harvested from renewable rubber tree farms.
  • Solvent-free glue called Aqua glue is used in the construction of all Scubapro neoprene products thicker than 1.5mm, except boots. Use of this glue is better for the environment and better for the workers building the products. If customers can’t find it, it doesn’t exist. Clearly list and describe the services you offer. Also, be sure to showcase a premium service.

Fourth Element's "Ocean Positive" Campaign

Fourth Element is making more and more of their products "OceanPositive". It began with ghost nets recovered from the ocean and recycled to make ECONYL yarn to use in Fourth Element swimwear and rashguards. The effort has grown from there...

  • Fourth Element swimwear, Thermocline, Hydroskins, and Hydro Leggings are made from 78% recycled materials.
  • Swimwear is packaged in bags made from cassava starch and other renewable resources. It biodegrades in months and is safe if consumed by animals.
  • X-Core self-heating vest uses REPREVE, a fiber made from recycled post-consumer waste, including plastic bottles.
  • New products will housed in plastic-free packaging
  • Mission 2020 Initiative - Fourth Element intends to eliminate the use of single-use plastic in the packaging of all its products by 2020 and to continue to develop new products and re-develop existing products using recycled materials wherever possible.

Sun Bum "Reef Friendly" Sunscreen

Sun Bum Sunscreens are both Oxybenzone free and Octinoxate free - these are the two ingredients noted in the research that is leading to new legislation intended to protect the reefs. In addition, as a fundamental principle, Sun Bum has always been adamant about removing any ingredients that may be questionable for us and the planet, so there are no questionable ingredients in their products either (such as parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde...)

At Submerged we have tried many "reef friendly / reef safe" sunscreens. Sun Bum tops the list as the best! First and foremost, it's an effective sunscreen. Beyond that, here are some other reasons why we like it so much more than some of the other products out there:

  • It goes on easily and doesn't turn you a weird shade of white like "reef friendly" mineral sunscreens
  • It doesn't burn your eyes after you clear your mask
  • It smells so good!
