Diving is generally a relaxing activity, but it does require a certain level of fitness to do it safely and get the most out of it. Here are some of the benefits of improving your overall fitness that will directly improve your scuba experiences include
Use less air and spend more time underwater!
- If you're more fit, you will not have to work as hard underwater, and your gas consumption rate will be decrease so you can spend more time underwater!
Need less lead weight!
- Lean tissue is less buoyant than fatty tissue. As you lose fat and gain lean muscle, you will also become less buoyant, meaning you can reduce the amount of lead weight you need.
Be stronger, have better balance, improve your flexibility
- Scuba gear is heavy. A full recreational set averages 50-60 lbs, while a doubles rig is at least 80 lbs. You have to balance all of that gear as you move around on the boat, and you have to climb up the boat ladder with all of that gear on your back at the end of the dive when you're the most tired. Being more fit will make moving all of that gear so much easier!
Be healthier and happier!
- The great thing about scuba diving is that it's something that we'll still be able to do when we're really old IF we're still fit and moving and active. And the best way to help ensure that we'll still be active 10, 20, 30+ years from now is to start now and keep moving!
